expectancy

You treat people based on your expectations of them.

A 1968 study found that when teachers were told certain students were academic 'bloomers,' those students showed significantly higher IQ gains by the end of the year.

This is the self-fulfilling prophecy. Because the teachers expected success, they provided more attention, encouragement, and challenge. Their behavior changed, which then changed the student's performance. The expectation created the reality.

The way you treat someone can force them to become your expectation.
