Your mind maps out space even in the dark.

Mental maps are formed using dead reckoning rather than just landmarks.

When people are blindfolded and led through a series of turns, they can accurately point back to their starting position. The brain keeps a continuous tally of distance and rotation to maintain an updated internal compass. This system functions even without visual anchors.

We are walking navigation computers by default.

What the check found
Jack Loomis et al. (1993) indeed demonstrated human path integration (dead reckoning). While the claim is accurate regarding the mechanism, 'rather than just' obscures that landmarks remain the primary global reference.
