You repeat a story until the details disappear.

A classic study showed that when participants retold a story over several sessions, they consistently simplified the narrative and discarded unconventional details.

This is known as serial reproduction. Over repeated tellings, your brain conforms the story to fit its existing cultural schemas, shedding information that doesn't fit the expected structure.

You change the past to make it fit your current story.
