social dynamics
You exert less effort when you work in a group.
The term 'social loafing' was coined and established by Latané, Williams, and Harkins in 1979.
Ingham et al. (1974) published 'The Ringelmann Effect: Studies of Group Size and Group Performance,' which experimentally confirmed that groups exert less individual effort than individuals working alone, a phenomenon the authors termed the 'Ringelmann effect'.
Responsibility is often diluted in the presence of others.
