People tend to attribute others' behavior to character while attributing their own behavior to circumstances, a phenomenon known as the actor-observer bias.
The 1967 Jones and Harris study provided evidence for the correspondence bias; the actor-observer difference was later formalized by Jones and Nisbett in 1971.
