You cannot ignore the meaning of a word.

The Stroop effect demonstrates that you are slower at identifying the ink color of a word that names a different color.

The brain processes word meaning automatically and much faster than it processes color information. This creates interference, as your automatic reading habit clashes with the intended task. You are unable to 'turn off' your reading process.

Your brain prioritizes ingrained habits over current tasks.
