attentional blink
You are functionally blind for half a second.
The attentional blink is a performance deficit where individuals struggle to identify a second target in a rapid sequence of stimuli when it appears within 200-500ms of a first target.
This phenomenon is limited to rapid serial processing tasks and does not imply a general inability to perceive new stimuli during all focus shifts.
Your awareness is a series of stutters, not a continuous stream.
Where this comes from
- Study
- Raymond et al. (1992), attentional blink
- What the check found
- The claim conflates a specific experimental performance deficit with general perception. You are not 'blind' to the world every time you shift focus.
- Confidence
- Solid, with limits
